Abstract

Objectives: The study aims to demonstrate the semantic impact of exegetical interpretation resulting from morphological variations among Qur'anic readings through the work of al-Naḥḥas. It also examines the effect of morphological differences between the readings on meaning and jurisprudential rulings. In addition, the study seeks to clarify al-Naḥḥas approach in addressing the variation of Qur'anic readings in explaining the semantic implications of lexical expressions. Methods: The study adopted the descriptive-analytical approach as well as the inductive method by collecting the texts addressed by al-Naḥḥas from Sūrat al-Baqarah in order to examine the impact of differences in Qur'ānic readings at the morphological level on meaning. This was carried out by citing the relevant verses, presenting al-Naḥḥas's view, and then discussing the opinions of scholars and their interpretations regarding the semantic implications of the different readings. Conclusions: The study reached several findings, including that the variation among Qur'anic readings introduces additional connotations and new meanings, thereby enhancing the richness and breadth of the Arabic language. It also found that morphological semantics constitutes an important source for interpretation and exegesis. Furthermore, the mutawātir Qur'anic readings are firmly established, having been accepted by the Muslim community; therefore, they are not to be rejected, nor should one reading be inherently preferred over another.
