Requirements for Using the STEM Approach in Teaching Science in Jordanian Public Schools

Abstract
Objectives: The study aimed to identify the requirements for implementing the STEM approach in science education in Jordanian schools, as well as to identify the obstacles that may hinder its implementation. Methods: To achieve the study's objectives, the descriptive-analytical method was employed, relying on the collection of facts and data in educational research related to the study's subject. The data was then processed, analyzed, interpreted, and comprehensively evaluated to reach the requirements for implementing this approach in Jordanian schools. Results: The study's results identified the requirements for implementing the STEM approach in teaching science, which were narrowed down to four requirements related to the teacher, student, educational content, and school environment. The study also revealed the obstacles related to these four requirements, based on the previous theoretical literature related to the study's subject. Conclusions: Based on the results, the researcher provided several recommendations to meet the necessary requirements for implementation, including: the collaboration of efforts among science teachers, researchers, decision-makers, administrators, curriculum developers, and educators to bridge the gap between them; considering a gradual approach with small changes to gradually alleviate the challenges faced by science teachers in implementing integrated curriculum lessons; adequate preparation of science teachers according to the integrated approach, and providing continuous support from STEM education specialists to effectively implement it; fostering genuine partnerships with local community institutions to leverage their resources.
