The Effectiveness of EMDR Technique in Reducing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms among Displaced Adolescents in Lebanon

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in alleviating symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among displaced adolescents who experienced the trauma of home destruction due to war. Methods: The study employed a quasi-experimental design and implemented an adapted treatment protocol tailored to the participants' cultural and developmental characteristics. Results: The results showed a statistically significant reduction (p < 0.001) in symptom severity in the experimental group compared to the control group, with the improvement sustained during a three-month follow-up period. A notable improvement was also observed in secondary psychological indicators, such as anxiety, depression, and self-concept. Conclusions: The study concludes that EMDR is a promising and effective intervention for this population and recommends its integration into psychological support programs within Arab contexts, emphasizing the importance of culturally adapting treatment protocols.
