Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to analyses selected cartoon characters frequently viewed by children to assess the extent to which these characters present masculine and feminine sexual models that support the child in constructing their sexual identity. It also examined how such portrayals influence children's perceptions of gender sexuality. Methods: The study employed an analytical methodology using a qualitative approach, focusing on the visual representation of thirteen cartoon characters across five episodes of various series or full-length films. Results: Findings revealed that all characters exhibited gender ambiguity, meaning they were portrayed with "neutral" traits that did not clearly indicate a specific gender-whether in appearance, voice, or behavior. This ambiguity can create confusion for the child viewer, particularly in understanding sexual identity and the associated traits of males and females, at a stage when the child is still forming basic concepts of self, others, and gender. Conclusions: The study recommended that those responsible for the upbringing and education of children should be aware of the media content children are exposed to, with an emphasis on filtering or, at the very least, minimizing exposure to ambiguous material. It also stressed the importance of providing both digital and non-digital alternatives and highlighted the critical role of genuine parental involvement in the child's daily life and activities, which contributes significantly to the healthy development of the child's personality.
