Abstract
This research paper aims to clarify the contemporary concept of sustainable development from the Islamic perspective. Discussing the role of the waqf in promoting sustainable development, as it is part of the Islamic financial system, and defining its development nature. The research adopted the descriptive analytical method, which works on deducing the outputs according to the inputs. The research findings revealed that: the sustainable development achieves a balance among three systems; environmental, economic and social. Islam knew and practiced sustainable development before the West, as Islam's vision of development stemmed from the issue of human succession on earth. It is a concept that combines spiritual and material development and elevates the human soul; Its development aims to achieve physical security from hunger and moral security from fear. Therefore, the Waqf has interests that are not found in other alms, and the social dimension is considered the dimension that distinguishes the Waqf in its service to sustainable development. It is a sustainable way to solve one of the widespread economic problems facing the world on a large scale, which is the problem of poverty and unemployment. When the highness and purposes of the Waqf were manifested through its long participation in the service of sustainable development and the reconstruction of the land.
