Abstract
Objectives: This study, titled "The Sunnah in Wael Hallaq's Thought and Methodology," aims to examine the intellectual and methodological treatment of the Prophetic Sunnah in the works of Professor Wael Hallaq. It introduces Hallaq's academic background, major publications, and broader scholarly contributions, with particular attention to his writings related to the Sunnah. The study also seeks to clarify his understanding of the concept of the Sunnah, its epistemological authority (ḥujjiyyah), and its historical development. Furthermore, it analyzes his classification of the Sunnah into mutawātir (mass-transmitted) and āḥād (solitary reports), the evidentiary value of each category, and his perspective on the relationship between the Qur'an and the Sunnah, as well as internal relations within the Sunnah itself. Methods: The research adopts a critical analytical approach grounded in the framework of uṣūl al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence). Through this lens, the researcher examines Hallaq's discussions of Sunnah-related issues and evaluates his methodological and theoretical positions. Particular attention is given to areas where Hallaq's views align with classical uṣūl scholarship and where they diverge, especially regarding the classification of hadith, the epistemic status of solitary reports, and his engagement with Orientalist critiques on these matters. Conclusions: The study concludes that Professor Wael Hallaq demonstrates a clear appreciation for the Sunnah and affirms its authority within Islamic legal thought. His epistemological positions generally correspond with many insights of classical uṣūl scholars. Nevertheless, the research identifies certain points of divergence in his analysis, which are critically examined and discussed by the researcher.
